11 June 2010 Conference in Honor of Robert Jervis
Together with the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace (Columbia University New York) the Institute of Political Science organized a conference in honor of Robert Jervis's 70th birthday. The contributions to the conference will shortly be made available in form of a Festschrift. The conference was held at the Kelogg Center, New York City.

3 April 2010 Distinguished NMUN Delegation
A BIA elective course taught by Kaspar Schiltz and Ulrike Baumgaertner allowed 14 participants from the University of St. Gallen to participate in the "National Model United Nations", representing Iceland at the U.N. headquarters in New York. During one week, more than 2'000 students from around the world discussed solutions for pressing problems of global politics.
The delegation successfully introduced a couple of resolutions and was decorated with two awards, one for their "Outstanding Position Papers" and one as a "Distinguished Delegation".

16 March 2010 ISS Forum: James Davis elected to Advisory Board
Professor James W. Davis, head of the IPW-HSG, has been elected to the Advisory Board of the International Security Studies Forum (ISSF), a collaboration among the International Studies Association's International Security Studies Section (ISSS), the journals International Security, Security Studies, Journal of Strategic Studies, and H-Diplo to promote the discussion of recent journal articles and new books on international security studies topics through a series of article reviews, roundtable reviews of books, roundtable forums, and essays.

Professor Daniele Caramani, head of the IPW-HSG, contributes a lecture on "Small-N Comparison: Qualitative Comparative Analysis, Fuzzy Sets and Boolean Algebra" to the Zukunftswerkstatt 2010: Methodik vergleichender Medienforschung organized by the Ulrich Saxer Foundation (IPMZ, University of Zurich).

13 January 2010 CLEA: New data release
The new data release of the Constituency-Level Election Archive (CLEA) is now online and can be accessed from http://www.electiondataarchive.org/. The dataset and documentation currently include 590 elections from 34 countries. Future releases are being planned that will include more countries and additional elections.

September 2009 Grants for SNF Research Projects
Professor Daniele Caramani received a three-year grant from the Swiss National Foundation for the project "Democratisation and the Emergence of Responsive Party Systems in Latin America" (project in collaboration with Simon Bornschier). Furthermore, the NCCR-SNF project on "Supra-National Democratisation in the European Union" was extended for a further four years (starting a collaboration with Kurt Imhof and Jens Lucht of the the Forschungsbereich Öffentlichkeit und Gesellschaft, University of Zurich).

Oliver Strijbis took part in the 5th ECPR General Conference in Potsdam and presented a paper co-authored with Michal Kotnarowski, University of Warsaw, on "How to Measure Ethnic Party Mobilization". From September 15th to September 26th, he will attend the ECPR Standing Group Summer School on 'Political Parties and European Democracy' in Florence and present a paper on "Survival or Revival? Professor James W. Davis moderated a panel discussion at the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Munich on the occasion of the publication of a new book edited by Dr. Reinhard C. Meier-Walser which is devoted toward the analysis of the impact of the foreign policy agenda of U.S. President Barack Obama on transatlantic relations. The book includes a chapter by James W. May 2009 Political Data Yearbook
Professor Daniele Caramani, head of the IPW-HSG, has been appointed Co-Editor of the Political Data Yearbook. He will serve as Co-Editor with Tim Bale, University of Sussex, for two years beginning from September, 2009.

The Political Data Yearbook is an annual special issue of the European Journal of Political Research.

6-7 March 2009 Daniele Caramani in Berlin: In Honour of Peter Flora
In honour of Peter Flora, Daniele Caramani (IPW-HSG) co-organized a symposium on "Comparing the Trajectories of European Societies" with Jens Alber (WZB Berlin) and Stein Kuhnle (Hertie School Berlin). Professor Flora, a pioneer in the field of comparative historical sociology, turned 65 on March 3, 2009.
At the symposium Professor Caramani presented a paper on Electorates and Party Systems in Europe.

7-8 February 2009 James W. Davis attends Munich Security Conference
Professor James W. Davis, head of the IPW-HSG, attended the Munich Security Conference and chaired the fourth CSU Transatlantic Forum in the run-up to the conference. Panelists included James Steinberg, Deputy Secretary of State, USA; Amb. Richard Holbrooke, Special Representative of the United States of America for Afghanistan and Pakistan; Amb. Kurt Volker, Permanent Representative of the US to NATO; the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence of Canada; Dr. Franz Josef Jung, Minister of Defense, Germany; Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, Member of the German Parliament and newly appointed Minister of Commerce and Technology; Christian Schmidt, Parliamentary State Secretary, Ministry of Defense, Berlin.
During the conference, US National Security Advisor, Gen. James L. Jones, USMC (Ret.) called for restructuring NATO from a purely defensive to a security alliance more attuned to the challenges of the 21st century. Prior to his appointment by President Barack Obama to the National Security post, Gen. Jones was a member of the International Advisory Board of the Institute's Centre for Security Economics and Technology (CSET) (see 1 December 2008).
8-9 January 2009 SPSA Annual Congress 2009 at the University of St. Gallen
For the first time after 38 years, the Annual Congress of the Swiss Political Science Association (SPSA) was hosted by the University of St. Gallen. More than 120 political scientists from all political science departments at Swiss universities gathered on the University's campus to present and discuss their recent and ongoing research projects and results. The topics of the workshops included European studies, electoral behaviour, the welfare state, international relations, political theory, as well as research methodology.
The conference was crowned by a plenary session with Peter J. Katzenstein, Professor for International Studies at Cornell University. A long-serving pioneer of his discipline, Professor Katzenstein delivered a far-reaching keynote lecture on Global Governance and the co-existence of civilisations. His theoretical and methodological criticism of the famous "Clash of Civilizations" hypothesis allowed Professor Katzenstein to elaborate on the current financial crisis from an unorthodox viewpoint. A panel of discussants, chaired by James W. Davis, reacted to his statements: Thomas J. Biersteker (Graduate Institute, Geneva), Francis Cheneval (Oxford University) and Katharina Michaelowa, University of Zurich.
18 December 2008 Daniele Caramani at University College Dublin
Professor Caramani was invited as guest lecturer at University College Dublin – School of Business. He co-taught a continuing education course with Dr. Roland Erne in the Industrial Relations group on "Designing International and Comparative Employment Relations Research". Participants to the course were researchers of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Working and Living Conditions (Eurofund), a EU body.

1 December 2008 Gen. James L. Jones, Member of the CSET Advisory Board, Named Barack Obama's National Security Advisor
US President-elect Barack Obama named his National Security and Foreign Policy Team in Chicago today. General James L. Jones, USMC (Ret.) a member of the International Advisory Board of the Centre for Security Economics and Technology (CSET) at the Institute of Political Science, University of St. Gallen, was named National Security Advisor. General Jones was an officer in the the US Marine Corps for 40 years and served as Commandant from 1999 through 2003. From 2003 through 2006 he was NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. After his retirement from the Marines, Jones became Chair of the Bard of the Atlantic Council of the United States, President of the United States Chamber of Commerce's Energy Institute, and joined the Board of Directors of The Boeing Company. With his appointment to the new US Administration General Jones will leave the CSET Advisory Board effective immediately. CSET is proud of its association with General Jones, is pleased with his new appointment, and wishes him all success in his new position.

Professor Daniele Caramani visited the Institute for Advanced Studies and delivered a guest talk on "The Integration of European Electorates and Party Systems: Nationalisation and Europeanisation Compared".
8 November 2008 How Did the «Black Kennedy» Beat the Clinton Machine?
In a number of newspaper articles and interviews Professor James W. Davis has commented on the US presidential election. In the Samstagsinterview, Der Bund published on November 8 Professor Davis states: "Er hat die Clinton-Maschine besiegt. Das war die grösste Leistung, weil die Clintons über viele Jahre eine gut funktionierende Organisation aufgebaut hatten, mit einem Netzwerk in ganz Amerika."
In the St. Galler Tagblatt of November 6 Professor Davis comments: "Die Entscheidung, die Rassenfrage zu thematisieren, hat sich [...] als richtig und weitsichtig erwiesen. Eine Mehrheit der Amerikaner nahm seine Botschaft wohlwollend auf.
On swissinfo.ch, November 5, Professor Davis expresses the hope that "we certainly have turned a page in history and can start to look forward to a very different and positive future."

A new President for the U.S. – what implications for Switzerland, Europe and the world? Professor James W. Davis, Head of the IPW-HSG, analysed the US presidential election and its consequences at the Swiss Innovation Forum.
4 November 2008 Professor Davis on the US Presidential Election
Starting at 11:30 p.m. Professor Davis spoke in front of the US Consulate in Frankfurt am Main leading into an exciting election night that determined the next US President.
The next morning at 6:30 a.m. Professor Davis participated in a panel discussion alongside Klaus-Dieter Frankenberger (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) and Dr. Martin Thunert (Heidelberg Center for American Studies).
30 October 2008 Professor Davis Heads Workshop at the University of Vienna
Professor Davis led a Workshop (October 28-30) dealing with "processes of conceptualization in social theory and practice" at the University of Vienna. The Workshop not only offered an in depth analysis of concepts and conceptualizetion in the social sciences, but also provided the participants with an opportunity to present and improve their research designs.
Additionally Professor Davis participated alongside Charles Hadley (University of New Orleans), Josef Melchior (Vienna School of Governance) and Christoph Prantner (Der Standard) in a panel dealing with the US elections. The panel was held by the center of graduate studies in sociology (University of Vienna) and the graduate section of the Austrian association of political science.

14 May 2008 US Security Policy after George W. Bush
The Honorable Walter B. Slocombe, United States Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Planning during the Clinton Administration and former Senior Advisor to the Provisional Authority in Iraq visits the IPW on May 14-15, 2007. On May 14, Mr. Slocombe will speek to students in Professor Davis' class "American Grand Strategy" on the future of US Security Policy after George W. Bush. On May 15, he will meet with doctoral students to discuss contemporary strategic challenges facing the US and its allies.

Dr. iur. 9 November 2007 Initiative for Intercultural Learning at Washington, DC
From October 29 to November 9, 2007 IPW-Director Professor James W. Davis accompanied the University of St. Gallen student group "Initiative for Intercultural Learning" on a visit to Washington, DC and New York. A busy schedule included briefings by high level government officials, including the Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Planning, Dr. Thomas Mahnken; the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Mr. Kurt Volker; the head of the Washington office of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Mr. Hilary Shelton.

On November 7th Daniele Caramani delivered a talk on "The Integration of European Electorates and Party Systems: Comparative and European Integration Perspectives" at the Center for European Studies, University of Michigan. On this occasion a collaboration about an online electoral data archive was established.

2 April 2007 Collaboration with VBS: Research Centre for Security Economics and Technology
The IPW-HSG with the support of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (VBS), is establishing a new Research Centre for Security Economics and Technology (SiWiTec). The new research centre is an interdisciplinary institution directed toward the analysis of the conceptual, organizational, economic, and technological dimensions of state-provided security. It will aim to ensure a high level of information exchange through the establishment of an international network with other institutions working in the field of security economics.

12. Februar 2007 Daniele Caramani gewinnt Vincent Wright Prize
Prof. Daniele Caramani, Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft und Direktor des IPW-HSG, ist für seinen Artikel "Is there a European Electorate and What Does it Look like? Evidence from Electoral Volatility Measures, 1976–2004" mit dem "Vincent Wright Prize" für den besten Beitrag des Jahres 2006 in der Zeitschrift West European Politics ausgezeichnet worden.
9. Februar 2007 James Davis moderiert Transatlantic Forum in München
Prof. James W. Davis, Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Internationale Beziehungen, führte bereits zum zweiten Mal den Vorsitz beim "Transatlantic Forum". Das von der Christlich-Sozialen Union (CSU) veranstaltete Treffen bringt am Vorabend der "Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz" Experten der Aussen- und Sicherheitspolitik aus Deutschland und Amerika zusammen, um über aktuelle Herausforderungen der transatlantischen Partnerschaft zu beraten. Im Anschluss an das Forum nahm Professor Davis an der 43. Münchener Sicherheitskonferenz teil.

April 2006 HSG-Delegation am National Model United Nations (NMUN)
Vom 11. bis zum 15. April 2006 nahm eine Delegation der Universität St. Gallen an der UNO-Simulationskonferenz NMUN in New York teil. Unter der Leitung von Dr. Beat Habegger und Kaspar Schiltz vertraten die Studentinnen und Studenten die Interessen der Slowakei in neun UNO-Gremien. Zudem wurde die Delegation vom UNO-Botschafter der Schweiz Peter Maurer und vom stv. UNO-Botschafter der Slowakei Michal Mlynár empfangen. Abgerundet wurde der Besuch durch eine UNO-Führung mit dem Pressechef der schweizerischen Mission Ruedi Christen sowie einem Treffen mit dem HSG-Alumni Club New York.

April 2006 Prof. Davis in Afghanistan als Teil einer NATO-Delegation
Professor James Davis war im April für einige Tage als Teil einer Delegation des Oberbefehlshabers der NATO in Afghanistan unterwegs. Unter anderem führte er Gespräche mit dem Verteidigungs-, dem Wirschafts-, dem Bildungsminister und mit dem Staatssekretär für Wasser und Strom. Mehr dazu im Artikel vom 13.
